NCAA Football – About the University of Wisconsin Madison Badgers Wisconsin has been known as the “badger” state since the earliest settlers came looking for minerals and in the early 1830s. The harsh winters without shelter forced the prospects to burrow tunnels into the hillside and live like badgers. This Wisconsin state school took its mascot proudly from the state’s nickname and became the UW Badgers in 1889. The Badgers play in the fourth oldest stadium in the nation, Camp Randall Stadium and boast a win in the most lopsided game in school history: 1890 against University of Wisconsin Whitewater, 106-0. They’ve met their oldest rival, University of Minnesota, 119 since 1890 making this the most played rival game in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The team was the first Big Ten conference winner after its introduction in 1896 with a 7-1-1 record and has since had its share of ups and downs, highs and lows over the years. Since current coach (and former defensive coordinator) took the position in 20056, he’s lead the Wisconsin Badgers to a more successful run, including their first Rose Bowl appearance since 1999 (in 2010).
