NFL Football – About the Chicago Bears This historic team has played home games in Soldier Field since 1971, previously playing at Wrigley Field. In recent years, Soldier Field was remodeled to update the stadium amenities, but maintain the historic significance of the stadium, a historic Chicago structure. The team plays in Chicago, but is headquartered in Lake Forest, a Chicago suburb, and was actually founded in Decatur Illinois (in 1919). Like many early football teams, the Bears got their start as a company team for the A.E. Staley food starch company (thus Staley Da Bear as their mascot). The team grew and became a charter member of the NFL in 1920 and wasn’t called the Chicago Bears until 1921 after being purchased for $100. The team ruled the league during it’s early days, winning eight pre-merger championships. They also started their historic rivalry with the Green Bay Packers in 1921. It’s rumored to have started when the Bears’ owner worked to expel the Packers from the league to prevent the Green Bay team from signing on a particularly coveted player. Legend says that the Bears franchise was especially helpful in getting the Packers back into the league after the great play had already signed with the Bears. Regardless, this is one of the oldest rivalries in the NFL. Get your tickets to regular season and post season Bears football games and watch the team as they make more history every day.
