NFL Football – About the Cleveland Browns The Brown started their career as the AAFC’s most successful franchise and was one of only three teams to merge with the NFL in 1950. The Cleveland team experienced some upset when former owner Art Modell tried to move the team to Baltimore. After legal action, the resulting compromise allowed Modell to keep player and staff contracts but required him to officially start a new franchise (now the Baltimore Ravens). However, the Cleveland Browns team name, archives and entire history would remain a part of Cleveland and after a three-year “deactivation” period, the new Cleveland Browns team played its first season in 1999. This interesting path from the AAFC to the NFL and from an “old” Browns to a “new” Browns has led to some dispute over the technical number of championships won as well as season records. Most agree on a comprehensive approach, meaning the team has won eight league championships (four in the AAFC and four in the NFL). Although they were once the sixth-highest winning percentage team of all the NFL Franchises, the Cleveland Browns is one of only four teams to never have played in a Super Bowl game. Additionally, they have never hosted a Super Bowl so they have the lone title of the only team to have never hosted nor played in the great game. Randy Lerner currently leads the team as Owner with Mike Holmgren as President and Pay Shurmur as Head Coach. Their colors are very specific: Seal Brown, Burnt Orange and White and they boast a dog-like mascot named Chomps who’s based on the team’s Dawg Pound Section at Cleveland Browns Stadium. This team has been through all sorts of ups and downs throughout its history but always manages to forge on with its fan following.
