NFL Football – About the Broncos The Broncos got their start in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League. They joined the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL Merger in 1970 and currently plays as part of the West Division of the American Football Conference. As a team, the Denver Broncos have two Super Bowl titles and six AFC Championships under their belt and have six individual players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. John Elway, Floyd Little, Gary Zimmerman, Willing Brown, Tony Dorsett and Shannon Sharpe, the hall-of-famers, are the Broncos’ most famous players, but the program as a whole has been pretty consistent overall. The team won its first game ever in September of 1960 and was the first AFL team to defeat an NFL team when they beat the Detroit Lions in a preseason game. After that, however, the 1960s weren’t kind to the Denver Broncos and the team didn’t really take off until signing “Franchise” Floyd Little in 1967. From there, the Broncos have had a relatively steady program with a new team superstar emerging every few years. The team bore the nickname “Orange Crush” during the 1977-1979 seasons to honor their hard-hitting defensive line. The 1983-1998 John Elway era was one of the Denver Brocos’ most famous time, leading the team to five Super Bowls and winning two of them. The Broncos sport Navy, Orange and white on their uniforms and have two separate mascots. Thunder II is the name of their live horse while their costume suit is called Miles, in honor of the Mile High Stadium they played in from 1960 to 2000.
