NFL Football – About the Houston Texans After Houston’s first team, the Oilers, moved to Nashville, Tennessee and became the Tennessee Titans, the city sought a new NFL franchise. In March 1999, the NFL owners voted to award Los Angeles the 32rd second expansion team, dependent on the city’s ability to create an acceptable ownership and stadium deal by September of that year. If LA failed to meet the NFL’s requirements, the next expansion team would default to Houston. The following months showed little progress on the west coast and in October, Houston’s Bob McNair won the vote of NFL owners with his $700 Million bid. Thereafter, things moved quickly and the Houston Texans’ Reliant Stadium was built while the team sought Dom Capers as the first Head Coach. Finally, the Houston Texans could start their inaugural season in 2002, winning their first game against the Dallas Cowboys. The Texans suffered some rough times in their following seasons and dealt with fan uproar in 2006 when they chose North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams over Reggie Bush and Vince Young – fan favorites. The team paid for their mistakes. In 2006, the Houston Texans experience their first even season at 8-8.
