NFL – About the Kansas City Chiefs Lamar Hunt started this franchise in 1960 under the name Dallas Texans as a Charter Member of the American Football League. The team joined the NFL during the ALF-NFL merger of 1970 after moving to Kansas City and becoming the Kansas City Chiefs. Today, the franchise is valued at slightly less than $1 billion. The Chiefs were the second team to appear in more than one Super Bowl (after the Green Bay Packers) and the first team to appear in the championship game in two separate decades. Today’s team sports Red, Gold and White and is cheered on by two mascots, K.C. Wolf and Warpaint (a horse). The Hunt Family owns the franchise and the team is coached by Todd Haley. The arrowhead design famously presented on the Chiefs’ helmets was drawn by original owner Lamar Hunt on a napkin during the move from Texas to Missouri and the uniform overall has stayed relatively consistent during the team’s history making only minor changes. The KC Chiefs are proud to have one of the most loyal fanbases in the entire NFL; they have had the second highest attendance average over the last decade, despite being in such a small media market. Fans replace the last line of The Star Spangled Banner with “The home of the CHIEFS” during home and away games and they offer several other taunting song choices following each Chiefs touchdown.
