Broadway Shows - About Memphis the Musical Huey Calhoun is a stock-boy, about to be fired, when he makes his boss a deal. If he can go to Delray's African-American underground rock and roll bar and sell his records in stock, he can be a salesman for the store. The owner of the store did not like Huey's choice of “race records”, so Huey lost his job, and Huey went on to apply for a white station radio job. Mr. Simmons the owner, was ready to throw Huey out with his first song as a disk jockey, when teenagers began to appear, demanding more. Huey could not read, and when he was asked to read an advertisement, he asked his friend Bobby to read it to him. He memorized it, then improvised on the air, ending with Hockadoo! The listeners liked the phrase so much, that the advertiser asked him to do all of his ads. Huey did not even know what it meant, but it caught on. Huey developed an interest in Felicia, Delray's sister, who was a singer waiting for her break in the recording industry. Huey proposes to Felicia, but she refuses, due to the prejudice. A gang of whites spot Felicia and Huey kissing, and beat her with a bat. Time passes, and Huey opens a new rock and roll television show in New York featuring all African-American dancers. He invites Felicia to star on the show, but she declines. The network promoting his show would not let Huey use the African-American dancers, so Huey kisses Felicia on the air, and proceeds to strip out of his suit also. Needless to say, that was the end of that opportunity, so Huey went back to Memphis to host another radio show. Felicia becomes engaged to another, but asks Huey to perform with her on stage in New York. He refuses at first, thinking that no one would remember him. In the middle of Felicia's song, Huey appears and finishes the song with her. Over the roar of the crowd's applause, he says “The name is Huey Calhoun. Goodnight and HOCKADOO!” This is an explosive topic full of dancing and wonderful music. It is a thrilling tale of fame and love that was forbidden, in a time of difference and indifference. Huey Calhoun tried to show that music is a universal language that everyone, no matter what color, can enjoy and appreciate. Memphis The Musical tickets may be obtained on line for shows in many cities throughout the United States, beginning now and until August 12, 2012.
