Broadway Shows - About Merchant of Venice Set in the 14th century in a wealthy and opulent Italy, The Merchant of Venice tells the story of Shylock, a Jewish money lender and his vendetta against Antonio, a wealthy merchant and generous Christian. Bassanio, a good friend of Antonio requests financial help from the wealthy merchant in order to travel to Belmont to seduce the stunningly beautiful Portia. Antonio is eager to help his friend Bassanio but with his merchant vessels at sea he has little available money with which to fund his friends trip. Antonio instructs his friend to find another lender and to use his name as security for the loan. Shylock is willing to loan the required three thousand ducats with no interest. His only condition is that if the money is not paid back in time he will exact a pound of flesh from Antonio’s body. Antonio perceives this as a generous offer and agrees to the conditions unaware that Shylock is harbouring a large amount of hatred for Antonio after he spat at him for being a Jew. He also resents the fact that the generous Antonio undermines his money lending business by lending without interest. Merchant of Venice tickets are on sale now and are not to be missed. |
