Broadway Shows - About Wicked in Nashville Wicked is a musical based on the Wizard of Oz, yet its retelling is from the two witches point of view. Glinda the pretty good witch of the north, and Elphaba the wicked witch of the west are roommates in magic school. They want to learn magic to join the Wizard in the Emerald City. They meet Fiyero, a prince who develops an immediate love interest in Glinda, and it makes Elphaba mad. Elphaba decides to leave and speak to the Wizard about how the animals in Oz are treated unfairly, and when Elphaba learns that the Wizard is responsible for their treatment, she steals his spell book, and escapes, asking Glinda to go along. Glinda refuses, but when Fiyero hears the Wizard's terrible rumors about Elphaba, he goes to find her. Elphaba's romance with Fiyero is short-lived due to a house falling from the sky. Elphaba investigates the house, only to be trapped by the Wizard's men. She escapes and flees to a castle in the western part of Oz while Dorothy plans to kill her. Glinda tries to warn Elphaba, they become friends again, and Elphaba is indeed destroyed by Dorothy. The overall moral dilemma seems to be whether evil is judged by a person's point of view. The characters are endearing, the musical scores are outstanding, and wherever you see Wicked, it will be enjoyed by all. |
